Bridging Regulations and Operations with Expertise at Des Moines International Airport (DSM)

Operators arriving at Des Moines International Airport (KDSM) must secure permission to land. This clearance should be requested at least 24 hours before the anticipated arrival time. Permission is granted with a strict tolerance of ±15 minutes; any deviation outside this window invalidates the prior approval, requiring the operator to reapply for landing permission. Commercial aircraft operators departing the U.S. must also obtain outbound clearance by contacting CBP directly.

Upon arrival, aircraft should follow the lead-in line to parking spot R5, situated just south of the main terminal, where a CBP officer will meet the aircraft to commence the inspection. The CBP facility is housed in a separate red brick building nearby. Regulated waste must be coordinated with Modern Aviation, except for flights originating from Canada.

All crew and passengers will be processed inside the Federal Inspection Station (FIS), where operators must be prepared to present passports, visas, operator licenses, medical certificates, aircraft registration, and user fee decals if applicable. Passengers may leave directly from the FIS after the inspection is complete. For weekend, holiday, or evening arrivals, landing rights must be secured by 3 pm on the last business day before arrival, and a Spanish-speaking officer is available upon request.
