Prior permission is required for operating a private flight or general aviation aircraft to overfly or make a passenger flight or fuel stop in Ghana. The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is responsible for overseeing the process and regulations.

Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) states that any aircraft owner/operator intending to overfly Ghana's airspace must submit an overflight clearance request to the Air Transport Department at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure during working hours.

Ghana, as a signatory to the Chicago Convention, requires strict compliance with ICAO general rules of international air traffic and regulations for the transport of troops, equipment, materials, and dangerous goods.

The issued overflight permit number must be included in Item 18 of the submitted Flight Plan.

The Ghana Overflight Permit is designated as GH/CNG/17/1900.

Ghana overflight permits are valid for a duration of +72 hours from the initial requested schedule.
