Overflight Permits in Eritrea’s International Operations
When planning business aviation operations or flights through Ethiopia, it’s essential to be aware of the complex political situation in Eritrea. Flights to the north of Ethiopia are typically not permitted to overfly or land in Eritrea due to ongoing political issues. The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) strictly enforces these restrictions, which also apply to flights arriving from or overflying Ethiopia. Consequently, overflying Ethiopian airspace necessitates avoiding Eritrea altogether.
Furthermore, any flights to or from Eritrea will result in the denial of Ethiopian permits. It is imperative to take note of NOTAMs issued by the Ethiopian CAA, temporarily withdrawing the use of specific airways within Ethiopian airspace due to border problems in the Eritrea region. Given the complex political landscape, using a supervisory handling agent is recommended when traveling to Ethiopia. They will manage “below wing” ground handling and often assist with credit arrangements, while flight plans should be submitted to air traffic control by the Pilot-in-Command (PIC). These considerations are crucial for smooth business aviation operations in the region.
Landing Permits in Eritrea's International Operations
For business aviation operators planning flights through Ethiopia, particularly when heading north, it’s important to understand the intricate political dynamics involving Eritrea. Landing in Eritrea or transiting its airspace en route to Ethiopia is generally not permitted due to ongoing political tensions. The Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) strictly enforces these restrictions, which extend to flights originating from or passing over Ethiopian territory.
Flights to or from Eritrea will result in Ethiopian permit denials. Additionally, the Ethiopian CAA issues NOTAMs temporarily restricting certain airways within Ethiopian airspace due to border disputes in the Eritrean region, safeguarding civilian aircraft operations. To ensure a seamless aviation operation, it is advisable to engage a supervisory handling agent when traveling to Ethiopia. These agents manage “below wing” ground handling and may assist with credit arrangements. Flight plans should be presented to air traffic control by the Pilot-in-Command (PIC). Given the ongoing political concerns with Eritrea, it is vital to adhere to these considerations for landing permits when planning flights in the region.
