Irrespective of the type of flight operation, operators must obtain prior permission to enter Belize’s airspace or land in the country. The application process necessitates the submission of comprehensive flight information and the requisite aircraft documents.

The Belize Civil Aviation Authority (BCAA) is responsible for issuing air navigation bills to local agents who handle overflight permit requests. Operators intending to fly in Belize airspace must request overflight clearance from the Air Transport Department at least 48 working hours before the scheduled departure. The flight plan should include the Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunication Network (AFTN) address. Overfly permits are mandatory for any flight transiting through Belize. Belize strictly adheres to the principles of the Chicago Convention and ICAO’s general rules for international air traffic. This includes the transportation of troops, equipment, materials, and dangerous goods, all of which must adhere to international regulations.

Operators should insert the issued overflight permit number in Item 18 of the submitted Flight Plan. Keep in mind that Belize overflight permits are valid for a duration of 24 hours from the requested schedule. Belize operates within a single Flight Information Region (FIR) in its airspace. Additionally, it’s crucial to note that the working hours of the Belize Civil Aviation Authority are from 1400Z to 2245Z.
