Sphinx International Airport is undergoing significant expansion to increase its total area from 4,500 to 23,000 square meters (48,000 to 248,000 square feet). This expansion aims to boost the airport's capacity to handle 900 passengers per hour, up from the current 300. The expanded facilities will include a 6,500 square meter travel hall, a 7,000 square meter arrival hall, a 1,000 square meter food and beverage area, duty-free shops, passport offices, an X-ray area, and 28 check-in counters. Additional infrastructure includes a banking and quarantine area, a baggage claim area, eight passport counters, eight escalators, and a cooling plant with a capacity of 1,440 tons of refrigeration. The airport features one asphalt runway, 16R/34L, measuring 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) in length. The runway is located 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west of the Cairo West runway complex, with aircraft parking ramp and terminal facilities on the west side. Navigation aids include the Cairo West TACAN and the Cairo VOR-DME, located 25.6 nautical miles (47 km) east of the airport. These facilities support efficient and safe operations for both passenger and cargo flights, catering to the growing traffic expected from attractions like the Grand Egyptian Museum.
