Announced in October 2017, the airport opened to commercial flights in summer 2018 and began experimental operations in October 2018. The airport received its first international flight from Jordan in January 2020 and started scheduled flights from Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022. Located on the Cairo-Alexandria desert road, the airport shares some infrastructure with Cairo West Air Base.
Sphinx International Airport is undergoing significant expansion to increase its total area from 4,500 to 23,000 square meters (48,000 to 248,000 square feet). The airport features one asphalt runway, 16R/34L, measuring 3,650 meters (11,975 feet) in length. The runway is located 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) west of the Cairo West runway complex, with aircraft parking ramp and terminal facilities on the west side. Navigation aids include the Cairo West TACAN and the Cairo VOR-DME, located 25.6 nautical miles (47 km) east of the airport. These facilities support efficient and safe operations for both passenger and cargo flights, catering to the growing traffic expected from attractions like the Grand Egyptian Museum.
