Previously known as Ophira International Airport, it serves as a key gateway for tourists visiting the resort city.
Sharm El Sheikh International Airport features three terminals. Terminal 1, inaugurated on 23 May 2007, has a capacity of 5 million passengers per year. The 43,000-square-metre terminal includes 40 check-in counters, two domestic gates, and six international gates, exiting to remote stands. The terminal's design, inspired by Bedouin culture, consists of two circular halls connected by a wedge-shaped central area housing passport control, duty-free shops, VIP areas, and eateries. Terminal 2, the airport's original building, underwent modernization in 2004, increasing its capacity to 2.5 million passengers annually. Plans announced in December 2016 aim to further expand Terminal 2 by 2 million passengers per year, bringing the airport's total capacity to 9.5 million. By November 2019, some expansion efforts increased annual capacity to 9 million, with ongoing projects targeting 20 million passengers per annum. Terminal 3, proposed in 2008, is expected to handle an additional 10 million passengers, facing a new airfield north of the existing airport. The terminal will feature modern amenities, including a departure hall, arrival hall, and origami-shaped roof folds for natural lighting and shade. The airport operates two asphalt runways, 04L/22R and 04R/22L, each 3,081 meters (10,108 feet) in length. In 2010, the airport handled 8,693,990 passengers, reflecting its critical role in Egypt's tourism industry.
