Located in Chongwe District, approximately 27 kilometers northeast of Lusaka’s city center, the airport opened in 1967 as Lusaka International Airport and was renamed in 2011 in honor of Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first president. It is the largest airport in Zambia and serves as a hub for the region.

    Kenneth Kaunda International Airport features two runways: the main asphalt runway designated 10/28, which is 3,962 meters (12,999 feet) long, and a secondary grass runway designated 15/33, which is 823 meters (2,700 feet) long. The airport has two terminals: Terminal One, used for domestic flights, and Terminal Two, opened in August 2021, which handles all international flights and includes six gates. Terminal Two spans a total floor area of 30,000 square meters and includes 22 check-in counters, 12 border channels, and six security check counters. The airport has a slot capacity of handling up to 6 million passengers annually. In the 2023 period, the airport handled approximately 1.53 million passengers.
